Basic/Clinical Science Session

Understanding and Targeting Autophagy in Diabetic Kidney Disease

November 18, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W187

Session Description

Autophagy is a mechanism of cell survival and homeostasis during starvation and stress that is conserved in all eukaryotes in which lysosomal degradation of cellular materials replenish energy stores and biosynthetic precursors. Autophagy, or it dysregulation/dysfunction, plays an important role in health, as well as in many diseases including aging and diabetic kidney disease (DKD). This session discusses the role of autophagy to promote cell survival and the contribution of glomerular components to cellular autophagy in DKD.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the process autophagy associated with cell survival; 2. describe the role of the renal endothelium in the development of DKD; 3. discuss the effect of high glucose on the mechanism of autophagy; and 4. discuss an approach to target autophagy in order to potentially slow progression of DKD.
