Oxygen Metabolism in Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Breath of Fresh Air

Session Description

Diabetic nephropathy remains a major unmet medical need, prompting intensive efforts to identify molecular drivers of the disease for which targeted therapies might be developed. This session looks at the effect of hyperglycemia on oxygen consumption and oxygen tension in the kidneys. New potential therapies based on molecular targets of chronic hypoxia are identified.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the role of chronic hypoxia in progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD); 2. explain state-of-the-art technology in assessing altered oxygen metabolism; 3. identify the role of hypoxia-inducible factors in the development and progression of DKD; and 4. discuss the role of reactive oxygen species in DKD.
