Educational Symposium

Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Hyperkalemia

November 17, 2016 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM

Location: S100A (McCormick Place)

Session Description

Hyperkalemia is common in individuals with CKD and associated with worse clinical outcomes. The presence of hyperkalemia often limits the ability to use inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system, which may increase the risk of progression of kidney diseases. The treatment of chronic hyperkalemia in CKD is challenging.

This symposium reviews the prevalence and risk factors for hyperkalemia and approaches for prevention and treatment of chronic hyperkalemia.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this symposium, the participant will be able to: 1. identify individuals at higher risk for chronic hyperkalemia; and 2. describe approaches to manage the risk of chronic hyperkalemia.
