Autoimmunity in Essential Hypertension: Myeloid Cells under Oxidative Stress

November 19, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W179

Session Description

Through their actions in the kidney, the vasculature, and even the skin, bone marrow–derived cells can have profound effects on the chronic hypertensive response. Myeloid cells engage in antigen presentation, T-cell regulation, and secretion of cytokines and hormones to enhance or suppress BP elevation. This session summarizes recently described mechanisms through which myeloid cells influence the pathogenesis of hypertension. These mechanistic pathways present novel therapeutic targets for antihypertensive therapy.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe how oxidant stress in myeloid cells modulates the hypertensive response; 2. explain mechanisms through which inflammatory cytokines in the skin can influence BP; and 3. discuss the protective actions of myeloid cell–derived Cox-2 to attenuate salt sensitivity.
