Senior Editorial Coordinator, JASN

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN)-which represents more than 20,000 physicians, researchers, nurses, and other health professionals dedicated to leading the fight against kidney diseases- seeks a full-time Senior Editorial Coordinator. Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Senior Editorial Coordinator is responsible for supporting the editorial processes of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). This individual will support the JASN Managing Editor, JASN editorial team, and ASN staff to ensure a standard of operation that will maintain the exemplary position of ASN publications in the field of nephrology.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the JASN Managing Editor, Editor in Chief, and ASN's Executive Editor to develop a working knowledge of all editorial processes
  • Develop and maintain superb professional communications between editors, authors, reviewers, vendors, and ASN staff
  • Implement process for JASN podcasts, visual abstracts, social media, and other innovations of interest to the JASN editorial team and ASN publications program
  • Oversee updates to the JASN website (Highwire JCore platform)
  • Assist the JASN Managing Editor with updating and maintaining author resources, including the Instructions for Authors
  • Assist the JASN Managing Editor with review process for all manuscripts, by learning and utilizing all aspects of the peer review management system
  • Develop and maintain reports to track JASN metrics within the peer review management system and other systems, in collaboration with the JASN Editor in Chief, JASN Managing Editor and other ASN Publications staff
  • Work under deadline in support of the JASN Managing Editor to ensure timely publication of materials
  • Maintain editorial process guidelines and style guides in accordance with the direction of the JASN Managing Editor
  • Assist JASN Managing Editor with review of author proofs to ensure publication requirements are met
  • Maintain and develop email templates with guidance from the JASN Managing Editor to ensure clarity among authors, reviewers and editors
  • Cross-train on CJASN and Kidney360 peer review management systems and serve as back-up administrator, as needed
  • Assist the ASN Publications staff in maintaining manuscript integrity, through existing tools (Sheridan's Image Forensics and iThenticate) and helping to analyze additional tools as they develop
  • Attend meetings: Council of Science Editors (CSE) and/or International Society of Managing & Technical Editors (ISMTE), vendor meetings (HighWire, ScholarOne, Sheridan, etc); make contacts at meetings to measure ASN journal operations against industry standards, and identify any areas of quality, peer review administration or journal publication policies that might need to be improved or updated
  • Participate in ASN staff meeting calls and in-person meetings as required
  • Undertake additional projects and publishing ventures as required
  • Accept other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this position and is not considered all inclusive


  • 5-7 years of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) experience
  • Excellent and diplomatic interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Masters' degree, PhD, background in a scientific discipline, with knowledge of medical science is a plus, although not required
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, to prioritize tasks, and meet multiple responsibilities
  • Strong awareness and understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality
  • Active interest in new developments in scientific publishing and their application to the ASN publications program
  • Willingness to actively collaborate with ASN's Publications Team to enhance the ASN publication portfolio
  • Occasional travel required
  • Teleworking option available
