Clinical Practice Session

Optimizing Medication Prescribing in Dialysis

November 10, 2019 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: 143, Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Session Description

For CKD and dialysis patients, prescribing drugs introduces challenges in dosing, with adjustments of the dose in relation to kidney function and possibly to target peak or trough levels. This session highlights the new drugs for anti-coagulation and anemia and describes how to improve dialysis patient safety by reducing polypharmacy

Learning Objective(s)

  • Discuss the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles of drug dosing in CKD and dialysis
  • Describe the current status of use of antiplatelet and IV and oral anticoagulants in dialysis patients
  • Discuss the use of iron therapy and different types of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents for dialysis-related anemia
  • Describe how to improve patient safety by reducing polypharmacy

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Dialysis
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
