Diet and Acid in CKD: Where Do We Stand?

November 07, 2019 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: 150, Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Session Description

Dietary patterns and metabolic acidosis contribute to the uremic milieu. In this session, particular emphasis is placed on unhealthy and healthy eating patterns in various stages of CKD. Experts review the lack of evidence for current opinion-based guidelines for phosphorus restriction in CKD and review the strength of evidence for treating metabolic acidosis with oral bicarbonate therapy in CKD.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Explain the association between different types of beverages and kidney disease risk
  • Describe the impact of dietary protein sources on the metabolic milieu and clinical outcomes in CKD
  • Discuss the level of evidence for current guidelines on phosphorus restriction in CKD
  • Summarize the evidence for treating metabolic acidosis in CKD
