Session Description

Patients with ESRD have extremely high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, due in part to nontraditional risk factors accompanied by deterioration of kidney function. Accumulating evidence suggests that altered gut microbiota may serve as one such risk factor, contributing to the development and progression of cardiovascular complications in patients with ESRD. This session describes changes in gut microbiota caused by decreased kidney function and the metabolic, cardiovascular, and renal effects of such changes.

  • Explain the qualitative and quantitative alterations of gut microbiota observed in patients with ESRD
  • Discuss how altered gut microbiota and gut-derived metabolites contribute to the development and progression of cardiovascular complications in ESRD
