Translational Session

From Discovery to Therapeutics: Have We Moved the Needle in Vascular Access Medicine?

October 24, 2020 | 02:30 PM - 04:30 PM

Location: Live-Streamed

Session Description

The mechanisms of arteriovenous fistula maturation failure remain poorly understood, but recent preclinical and clinical studies provide insight into novel mechanisms of arteriovenous fistula development. New technologies are also emerging to both create arteriovenous fistulas and treat dysfunctional arteriovenous fistulas. This session outlines advances in arteriovenous fistula creation and maintenance and vascular access care.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Discuss the mechanisms of arteriovenous fistula maturation failure
  • Summarize the findings from the Hemodialysis Fistula Consortium and how these results will affect future research and clinical vascular access care
  • Outline results from recent randomized clinical trials in vascular access and novel technologies for arteriovenous fistula creation and maintenance
  • Identify novel approaches for delivering pharmacologic therapies to prevent and treat dialysis vascular access dysfunction

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Dialysis
  • Chronic Kidney Disease

Moderators

  • Timmy C. Lee, MD, MPH, FASN
