Basic/Clinical Science Session

Modulating the Development and Severity of AKI

October 23, 2020 | 02:30 PM - 04:30 PM

Location: Simulive

Session Description

Novel therapeutic interventions are required to prevent or treat AKI. This session reviews emerging data on the role of the renin angiotensin system and renal metabolism in regulating renal injury and survival. It also examines how assessing cardiac and systemic hemodynamics can guide therapeutic interventions so that renal perfusion is preserved, thus decreasing one of the risks for renal injury.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Examine hemodynamic-dependent and -independent effects of angiotensin II that may explain its potential beneficial effects in acute kidney disease
  • Define the role of hemodynamic assessments in estimating renal perfusion and whether it is pertinent to determining renal risk
  • Describe the ways point-of-care ultrasonography can be used to guide management of AKI
  • Discuss how fluid overload can promote intra-abdominal hypertension and consequently impair abdominal perfusion pressure, which in turn reduces renal perfusion and facilitates AKI

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Acute Kidney Injury
