Causes and Treatments for CKD-Associated Pruritus

October 24, 2020 | 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM

Location: Simulive

Session Description

CKD-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) is common and affects the morbidity and quality of life of patients with CKD. The pathogenesis of CKD-aP is not completely understood but is likely multifactorial. Several hypotheses have been proposed, including metabolic disturbances, dysregulated immune response, and imbalances in the endogenous opioid system.

Despite the impact of CKD-aP, no professional nephrology societies have issued diagnostic or treatment guidelines, and no therapies have been approved in the United States or Europe. Treatment is currently limited to off-label therapies with limited effectiveness or substantial adverse effects, but emerging treatments are being investigated.

This symposium reviews the current evidence and pathophysiology of CKD-aP and provides information for nephrology clinicians to guide their treatment plans.

Support is provided by an educational grant from Cara Therapeutics, Inc.
