Kidney Week

Basic/Clinical Science Session

Cellular Senescence, Premature Aging, and CKD

November 05, 2021 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: On-Demand, Virtual Only

Session Description

Age-related disorders such as CKD pose unprecedented challenges. In many aspects, CKD can be viewed as a state of accelerated and premature aging. Aging kidneys and CKD share many common characteristic features with increased cellular senescence, an irreversible cell cycle arrest with altered secretome. This session discusses the emerging literature on the role of cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of CKD, highlights recent progress in delineating the underlying mechanisms, and reviews therapeutic options targeting senescent cells in designing treatment of CKD.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the role of cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of CKD
  • Discuss recent progress in delineating the signal pathway regulating cellular senescence
  • Discuss the potential of using senescent cells as a therapeutic target for the treatment of CKD
