Thrombotic Microangiopathies Beyond Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: Causes and Treatment Options

November 04, 2021 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: On-Demand, Virtual Only

Session Description

Thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) are systemic diseases of multiple causes that frequently affect the kidneys. Nephrologists are an important part of the multidisciplinary team caring for patients with TMA - either to evaluate and treat the kidney manifestations of TMA or to provide plasma exchange. Because of these roles, nephrologists need to understand current developments in assessing and treating patients with TMA. The session focuses on antiphospholipid syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and discusses the challenges of caring for pregnant patients with TMA.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the spectrum of underlying causes and the histologic features in patients with TMA
  • Discuss the antibody spectrum, clinics, disease mechanisms, and current treatment approaches in antiphospholipid syndrome
  • Describe the appropriate plasma exchange, nanobodies to von Willebrand factor, and immunosuppression for patients with TTP
  • Describe the specifics of TMA during pregnancy and in the postnatal period
