Translational Session

Mechanistic Insight and Pathologic Consequences of Crystalluria

November 06, 2021 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: On-Demand, Virtual Only

Session Description

Mechanisms have evolved in humans to ensure mineral solubility in tubular fluid when concentrations are elevated. Failure of these mechanisms can result in kidney pathology. This session highlights our current understanding of important pathways regulating crystal formation and clearance, reviews the association between crystalluria and kidney disease progression, and describes novel approaches to kidney stone prevention.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe mechanisms that regulate crystal solubility and clearance from tubular fluid
  • Identify novel clinical risk factors for kidney stone formation
  • Discuss the current evidence supporting a role of crystalluria in kidney cyst formation

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Bone and Mineral Metabolism
  • Genetic Diseases of the Kidneys
