Translational Session

Central Role of Phosphate in CKD-MBD, Including the Jack W. Coburn, MD, Endowed Lectureship

November 06, 2021 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: Live-Stream, Virtual Only

Session Description

Evolving evidence suggests phosphate as a primary driver of many of the clinical outcomes related to CKD-MBD. This session highlights current knowledge of phosphate balance in CKD and the evidence implicating phosphate as a contributor to CKD progression and associated comorbid conditions.

ASN gratefully acknowledges Amgen for support of the Jack W. Coburn, MD, Endowed Lectureship.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Explain how phosphate balance is altered by CKD and how pathways altering phosphate balance change in this setting
  • State the major sources of phosphate consumption in industrialized countries
  • Discuss novel mechanisms whereby phosphate regulates PTH, mineral metabolism, and nonvascular organ pathology in CKD

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Bone and Mineral Metabolism
  • Chronic Kidney Disease

  • Marciana Laster, MD, MS
  • Sharon M. Moe, MD, FASN
