COVID-19 and the Kidneys: The Pediatric Perspective

November 05, 2021 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: Live-Stream, Virtual Only

Session Description

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected patients with kidney diseases. Our understanding of the interplay between SARS-CoV-2 and the kidneys, particularly in children, is evolving rapidly. This state-of-the-art session reviews the latest clinical and experimental evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in pediatric nephrology, including the role of the renin-angiotensin system, COVID-19-associated nephropathy, AKI, and the clinical management implications for children with existing kidney diseases.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the kidney, including the role of the renin-angiotensin system on disease progression and the association with collapsing glomerulopathy
  • Explain the unique clinical aspects regarding presentation and treatment of AKI in children with COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C)
  • Discuss how the pandemic affects the management of children with existing kidney diseases, including the approach to immunosuppression and activity restrictions

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Development and Pediatrics
  • Acute Kidney Injury
