Session Description

While primary hypertension remains the leading cause of hypertension in both children and adults, secondary hypertension remains an important cause of hypertension, particularly among patients with resistant hypertension. This session explores various forms of secondary hypertension along with advances in diagnosis and treatment, with a particular focus on the pediatric population.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Distinguish the clinical and laboratory findings that define low- and high-renin hypertension and describe optimal treatment approaches
  • Explain how alterations to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, both medication and non-medication options, can lead to hypertension
  • Describe the role of early exposures (hypoxia, vascular lines, hypoperfusion, nephrotoxins) on the development of hypertension throughout the life course
