Basic/Clinical Science Session

Uncovering a Molecular Basis for CKD-MBD

November 05, 2021 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: Live-Stream, Virtual Only

Session Description

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have enabled remarkable developments in our ability to discover the genetic basis of mineral metabolism disturbances. Although we are far from using these findings to inform clinical practice, we are gaining understanding of novel biological mechanisms in these traits. This session discusses GWAS and how their use will affect patient care.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the utility and controversies of genetic studies of CKD-MBD
  • Discuss the use of GWAS to enhance our understanding of the effects of MBD physiology
  • Outline the ways the practical use of GWAS and genetic studies will affect patient care

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Bone and Mineral Metabolism
  • Genetic Diseases of the Kidneys

Moderators

  • Charles Ginsberg, MD
  • Michal L. Melamed, MD
