Tackling Hyperkalemia: Renewed Importance in Hypertension and CKD

November 05, 2021 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: On-Demand, Virtual Only

Session Description

Novel mechanisms of hyperkalemia have been uncovered in the past decade. How we manage hyperkalemia due to the administration of ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or mineralocorticoid receptor blockers is well studied, but two new classes of therapeutics have re-invigorated the discussion: nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists and novel potassium-binding agents. This session reviews the mechanisms of potassium handling, the epidemiology of hyperkalemia in CKD, and how novel agents may change how we approach potassium.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the mechanisms of renal potassium handling in the setting of hypertension and CKD
  • Discuss the epidemiology of hyperkalemia in resistant hypertension and CKD
  • Outline the evidence for how nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists may be less likely to cause hyperkalemia
  • Explain the effectiveness of potassium-binding agents in treating hyperkalemia in resistant hypertension and CKD
