New Insights in Iron Deficiency Anemia Among Patients with Non-Dialysis CKD

November 04, 2021 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM

Location: Simulive, Virtual Only

Session Description

Common among patients with CKD, anemia and impaired iron homeostasis are associated with significant adverse outcomes. New insights from basic science, epidemiological studies, and randomized trials, including the emergence of new iron agents and hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs), have added complexity to assessing and managing iron deficiency anemia in the context of CKD.

This symposium provides updates on new biological and clinical data that has critical implications in the diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia among patients with CKD.

Support is provided by an educational grant from Akebia Therapeutics, Inc.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Discuss novel mechanisms by which disturbances in systemic iron homeostasis contribute to iron deficiency in CKD
  • Describe the diagnostic parameters for iron deficiency anemia and their limitations
  • Examine the effect of oral iron preparations, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, and HIF-PHIs on iron deficiency anemia in CKD
