Basics to Bedside: State-of-the-Art Rationale and Approach to Hyperkalemia in Kidney Diseases

Session Description

A fundamental role of the kidneys, potassium regulation is commonly dysfunctional in the setting of kidney diseases. Alterations in potassium metabolism are even more common in older populations with multiple comorbidities who are treated with such medications as RAAS inhibitors. Hyperkalemia specifically is associated with a higher risk of death and cardiovascular complications. Prevention and management of severe hyperkalemia remains a core responsibility of nephrologists in reducing the risk for cardiac arrhythmias and other complications.

Reviewing the fundamentals of potassium regulation is important to all providers of nephrology care. This symposium discusses cellular and transport basics in relation to the development of hyperkalemia therapies, including novel potassium binders. Emerging evidence from clinical trials is outlined for use in making effective treatment decisions and understanding the spectrum of safety considerations.
