Controversies in Phosphorus Homeostasis and Management in CKD

November 03, 2022 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W414, Orange County Convention Center, West Building

Session Description

This session conducts debates related to two major areas of controversy in phosphorus homeostasis and management in CKD. The first set of debates addresses whether soluble klotho has direct cellular effects that impact phosphorus regulation or whether soluble klotho's major role in phosphorus homeostasis is to bind to circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23). The second set of debates addresses whether reduction in dietary phosphorus intake is critical for preventing CKD-MBD in patients with CKD.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the physiologic actions of klotho
  • Define the role of soluble klotho in FGF-23 signaling
  • Discuss the benefits and consequences of dietary phosphorus reduction in preventing CKD-MBD

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Bones, Stones, and Mineral Metabolism

Moderators

  • Kenneth E. White, PhD
  • Myles Wolf, MD
