Metabolism and Kidney Diseases

November 03, 2022 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W230, Orange County Convention Center, West Building

Session Description

Metabolism consists of a series of reactions that occur within living cells. The process of metabolism involves many cellular pathways to ultimately provide cells with the energy required to carry out their function. In eukaryotes, the metabolic pathways occur within the cytosol and mitochondria of cells with the utilization of glucose or fatty acids providing the majority of cellular energy. The changes of these metabolic pathways due to alteration of transporting glucoses in the cells or alteration of signal transduction affecting these pathways will cause metabolic disturbances, ultimately leading to development of diseases. This session provides an overview of metabolism and mitochondria function, imbalances of metabolism, and metabolic reprogramming, as well as their roles in development of kidney diseases and hypertension.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the metabolism, cellular pathways, and function of mitochondria
  • Explain the risks of imbalanced metabolism in development of kidney disease and hypertension
  • Discuss the potential mechanisms underlying the roles of metabolic imbalances and metabolic reprogramming in the development of kidney diseases and hypertension
