Management of Hyperphosphatemia in Patients with ESKD, Especially During the COVID-19 Pandemic

November 03, 2022 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM

Location: Regency Ballroom S, Hyatt Regency Orlando

Session Description

Hyperphosphatemia is a common complication in patients with ESKD, associated with such adverse consequences as CKD-MBD, cardiovascular calcification, and higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Phosphate binders represent the most common therapy used to treat hyperphosphatemia in ESKD. However, control rates remain inadequate, in part because of poor adherence to medication or dialysis regimens. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected or disrupted medical care for patients with ESKD, including dialysis and hyperphosphatemia treatment.

This symposium discusses the latest developments in the prevention and management of hyperphosphatemia in patients with ESKD. The importance of better management of hyperphosphatemia and MBD is discussed in relation to health outcomes in patients with ESKD, particularly during public health emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Support is provided by an educational grant from Fresenius Medical Care.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe how morbidity and mortality risks associated with hyperphosphatemia in patients with ESKD have evolved over time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Discuss controversies associated with the treatment of hyperphosphatemia, especially how the pandemic may have disrupted care
  • Describe how randomized clinical trials and real-world effectiveness data influence the quality of care associated with hyperphosphatemia management

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Disorders
  • Bones, Stones, and Mineral Metabolism
