Nephrocardiology: An Emerging Field in Medicine

Course Description

The interconnection between nephrology and cardiovascular medicine (CVM) is extensive, common, clinically important, and is beyond cardiorenal syndrome and the cardiovascular complications of CKD. Many other topics of nephrocardiology are equally important but are frequently overlooked. "Nephrocardiology" is the interconnection between nephrology and CVM from nine different aspects of pathophysiology, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, risk factors, monitoring, therapy, and systemic diseases that involve both organ systems. This early program explores nephrocardiology, with an emphasis on its practical aspects. Adequate exposure to those common and clinically important topics is necessary for optimal patient care by nephrologists and other relevant professionals.

ASN designates this blended learning activity for a maximum of 14.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) discuss and provide examples of the extent of the interconnection between nephrology and CVM and its clinical importance; 2) explain the pathophysiologic interaction between "nephrology-related" and "CVM-related" conditions beyond heart failure, kidney failure, and cardiorenal syndrome; 3) illustrate how the coexistence of "nephrology-related" and "CVM-related" conditions may influence diagnostic approaches to various pathologic conditions; and 4) formulate management strategies in the setting of concomitant "nephrology-related" and "CVM-related" conditions.
