Clinical Practice Session
We Are Never over the Rainbow: Nephrology Care for the LGBTQ+ Community
November 04, 2023 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 109, Pennsylvania Convention Center
Session Description
This session discusses health care disparities experienced by the LGBTQ+ population and explores how race and socioeconomic status interplay with these disparities. Nephrology-specific issues for the transgender population are addressed, including, but not limited to, inaccuracies of plasma creatinine concentration (PCr) in estimating GFR for those on gender-affirming hormone therapy and issues unique to transgender transplant patients. Finally, concrete suggestions are provided to make physician practices more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community, with the aim of reducing health care disparities in this population.
ASN thanks the ASN Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for assistance with this session.
