Liquid "Gold," Urinary Sediment Microscopy: Current Utility of an Old Tool

November 04, 2023 | 04:30 PM - 06:00 PM

Location: Room 204, Pennsylvania Convention Center

Session Description

Microscopic examination of the urinary sediment is an inexpensive noninvasive tool with proven clinical utility. However, proficiency is not uniformly acquired across graduate training programs. In addition, there have been advances in technology and digital photography that enable better image acquisition with impact on clinical practice. Furthermore, new studies have been recently published expanding on the diagnostic and prognostic value of urine microscopy. This session reviews these important topics in kidney care.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Summarize the fundamentals of optimal performance of microscopic examination of the urinary sediment
  • Explain the clinical utility of urinary sediment microscopy to evaluate and prognosticate AKI
  • Discuss the clinical utility of urinary sediment microscopy for the diagnosis of nephritic and nephrotic syndrome
  • Describe the clinical utility of urinary sediment microscopy for the evaluation of nephrolithiasis and drug-related crystal-induced uronephropathies

Learning Pathway(s)

  • AKI and Critical Care
  • Glomerular Diseases
