Session Description

Many medications are cleared by the kidneys. A delicate balance must therefore be achieved between therapeutic and toxic accumulation of medications in patients with reduced kidney function. This session discusses the factors to consider when prescribing and de-prescribing medications for patients with advanced CKD and patients receiving dialysis.

  • Outline the factors to consider when prescribing medications in patients with reduced kidney function
  • Evaluate the efficacy of thiazide diuretics in patients with advanced CKD or ESKD on dialysis
  • Describe the contribution of tubular secretory function on the clearance of medications in advanced CKD
  • Discuss the updated KDIGO guidelines regarding polypharmacy in patients with CKD
