Insights into Liver-Kidney Cross-Talk

November 03, 2023 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: Room 118, Pennsylvania Convention Center

Session Description

Chronic liver disease and CKD are both progressive chronic conditions that share important cardiometabolic risk factors and pathogenic mechanisms. There is a growing body of epidemiologic evidence that suggests a strong causal association between chronic liver disease and CKD, independent of potential confounding comorbid diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. This session provides an overview of the liver-kidney cross-talk and commonly encountered chronic liver diseases that are potential risk factors in the development of CKD.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the relationship between chronic liver diseases and CKD
  • Summarize the latest breakthroughs in our understanding of the relationship between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and CKD
  • Examine the data and evaluate the use of potential liver biomarkers in the prediction of kidney outcomes in patients with chronic liver diseases
  • Discuss the epidemiology and implications of CKD in liver transplant recipients

Learning Pathway(s)

  • CKD Non-Dialysis
  • AKI and Critical Care
