Special Session

Winning Team: The Nephrology Workforce for the 21st Century

November 03, 2023 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: Room 121, Pennsylvania Convention Center

Session Description

Internal medicine resident interest in the field of nephrology continues to decline, and this is a real concern for who will be caring for our patients. The pipeline is drying up; how will we continue to deliver care? Finding ways to fill the gap of nephrology care is challenging; however, advanced practice practitioners can fill in those gaps. This session reviews these important topics in kidney care.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Explain the role of advanced practice providers (APPs) in nephrology practices and in closing the gap in nephrology fellowship programs
  • Describe the advantages and challenges of using internal medicine graduates in residencies and private practice
  • Referring to the data collected over the last 15 years of the typical workload of a nephrology APP, outline the different types of available practices, positions, and salaries
  • Discuss what the gaps in nephrology are creating in the management of nephrology patients
