Fundamentals of Point-of-Care Ultrasonography in Nephrology

ASN thanks FUJIFILM Sonosite, Inc. and Mindray North America for in-kind support.

Course Description

Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is intended to answer focused clinical questions at the bedside and guide patient management. In nephrology practice, multiorgan POCUS is an invaluable tool in the evaluation of AKI and complex fluid/electrolyte disorders. This day-long program introduces participants to key sonographic applications pertinent to nephrology and offers hands-on experience, fostering confidence in participants when they perform scans within their respective institutions. Mentored hands-on practice is the best way to learn both the psychomotor and cognitive pattern-recognition aspects of POCUS. The curriculum is divided approximately equally between didactic sessions and hands-on experiences.

Space is limited to 80 participants. Participants will be split into 2 groups onsite. Both groups will experience the same lectures and hands-on workshops.

ASN designates this live course for a maximum of 7.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) discuss the fundamental principles of ultrasound image generation, orientation, and optimization; 2) describe common abnormalities encountered in kidney, lung, and focused cardiac ultrasonography; and 3) develop proficiency in acquiring high-quality ultrasound images suitable for diagnostic interpretation.
