Love Your Kidneys! February 14 - March 12

Love Your Kidneys. Know Your Risk. Take Action.

Kidney diseases affect 1 in 7 adults, yet 9 out of 10 people don't know they are at risk.

More than 37 million Americans are living with kidney diseases, many without realizing it. Kidney health is often overlooked, but it can play a huge role in saving your kidneys, heart, and life. Learning your risk and acting early can help prevent serious complications and support lifelong kidney and heart health.

Why Kidney Health Matters

Kidney diseases can affect almost anyone at any time, but symptoms often go undetected. Certain medical conditions or a family history of them increases the risk. Knowing the risk factors, including your family history, can help with early identification and prevention of disease progression.

Kidney Health and Heart Health Are Connected

Recent research reveals a strong connection between kidney health and heart health. From American Heart Month in February through World Kidney Day on March 12, ASN encourages you to take small, everyday steps now to protect your kidneys, safeguard your heart, and improve long-term health.

Know Your Risk

Kidney diseases can affect anyone, but certain factors increase your risk. You are at higher risk if you:

  • Have high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease
  • Have a family history of kidney disease
  • Are age 60 or older
  • Have obesity or metabolic conditions
  • Have limited access to regular preventive care

For some, kidney disease often has no warning signs. Knowing your risk—and acting early—are important steps toward making a meaningful difference in your treatment plan.

Take Action to Love Your Kidneys

Small, everyday steps can help you protect your kidney and heart health. Here is what you can do:

  • Talk with a health care professional about kidney health and screening and ask if you should have a uACR urine test and an eGFR blood test to check for kidney diseases
  • Manage your blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart health
  • Stay informed about kidney disease risks and prevention resources
  • Share what you have learned with your family and friends

Taking a proactive approach to your health leads to early detection, which can save your kidneys, heart, and life.
