Urge Your Members of Congress to Advance the Living Donor Protection Act
Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of the more than 37 million Americans living with kidney diseases. For most of the more than 800,000 Americans with kidney failure, transplantation is the optimal therapy, but an organ shortage means there are 90,000 patients on the kidney transplant waitlist and 13 Americans die every day while waiting for a transplant.
Increasing the number of living donors is crucial for improving patient access to transplantation. Unfortunately, living donors face many barriers in providing the gift of life. One in four living organ donors experience difficulty securing or paying for insurance.
Over 100 advocates representing 20 patient and professional kidney health organizations are urging Congress to advance the Living Donor Protection Act, cost neutral, bipartisan legislation that would prevent life, disability, and long term care insurance from discriminating against living donors and would ensure living donors can retain employment after donating an organ by codifying Family Medical Leave Act protections.
As a constituent, Congress needs to hear from you. Urge your congressional delegation to advance the Living Donor Protection Act (H.R. 1255/ S. 377) to protect living donors and increase kidneys available for transplant.
