Samir M. Parikh, MD, FASN, President
Dr. Parikh is Professor of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology and Chair of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He holds the Donald W. Seldin Distinguished Chair in Internal Medicine and the Ruth W. and Milton P. Levy, Sr., Chair in Molecular Nephrology.
His research investigates the genetic, molecular, and metabolic mechanisms underlying age-related frailty and organ dysfunction. His work has been published in leading journals, including Science, Nature, Nature Medicine, Science Translational Medicine, Cell Metabolism, JCI, and PNAS.
Dr. Parikh graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in chemistry and received the Founders Medal from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed residency and nephrology fellowship training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Parikh is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, American Association of Physicians, Interurban Clinical Club, Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, and the American Clinical and Climatological Association. His honors include the NIH Outstanding Investigator Award, the Sir William Osler Award, and the Donald W. Seldin Award from the American Society of Nephrology and the American Heart Association. He has delivered more than 250 invited lectures worldwide, including plenary addresses across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Dr. Parikh currently serves as the 59th President of the American Society of Nephrology. Achievements during his presidency include passage of the HOLD Act to support living donors, bipartisan-invited testimony on the future of kidney care by the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, publication of the Transforming Kidney Health Research Report, and an inaugural public awareness campaign “Love Your Kidneys” that reached 36M+ people across North America. Dr. Parikh has been quoted and published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, PBS, National Geographic, CBSNewsRadio, CNN Newssource, iHeartRadio, Nature, and other media.
