ASN Biography

William M. Bennett, MD, FASN, is a Transplant Nephrologist at Legacy Transplant Services with Legacy Health Systems in Portland, Oregon. With more than 50 years of experience, Dr. Bennett specializes in kidney transplantation.

Dr. Bennett received his medical degree from Northwestern University. He was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. After a residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University, Dr. Bennett was chief resident, internal medicine at Oregon Health & Sciences University, Portland. He completed a fellowship in nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He retired as a Professor at Oregon Health & Sciences University in 1999. Dr. Bennett is an Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Bennett is a clinician, researcher, and educator. He is board certified and recertified in internal medicine, nephrology, clinical pharmacology. and clinical hypertension. He has been the principal investigator for multiple clinical studies. He has 509 peer-reviewed publications to his credit and has contributed to 185 books and chapters. Dr. Bennett is a Master of the American College of Physicians, is a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation, is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and was the ASN’s President in 1998-1999.

Dr. Bennett has been honored for his contributions to the medical profession, including the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation Jared J. Grantham Distinguished Achievement Award, the ASN Belding H. Scribner Award, the Kidney Association of Oregon First Gift of Life Award, the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon Discovery Award and Prize, the American Association of Kidney Patients Medal of Excellence Award for his commitment to patient care, the National Kidney Foundation Donald W. Seldin Award for excellence in clinical nephrology, and the Alumnus of the Year for Northwestern University Medical School in 2014. He has been identified as a nationally ranked top physician by America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America.
