William Luke Whittier, MD, FASN, BRCU Faculty

ASN Biography
Dr. Whittier began practicing Nephrology in 2003. He went to Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine for a combined BS/MD program and graduated in 1998, when he moved on to do Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He became a full Professor of Medicine at Rush after 16 years and has been involved in a variety of research studies and trials, ranging from the benefits of more frequent hemodialysis to prevention of kidney stones. His main research interests and publications are not only in the area of improving dialysis, but also helping patients prior to dialysis in the areas of lupus nephritis, diabetic kidney disease, and evaluating the safety and adequacy of the kidney biopsy. He has also published in the realm of acid-base as well as electrolyte abnormalities such as hyponatremia. He is avidly involved in teaching, not only to medical students, residents, and fellows, but also nurses, physician assistants, dieticians, and teaches in a nationwide continuing medical education courses for Internal Medicine and Nephrology physician specialties. His teaching is exemplary and he has received several teaching awards from students in various subspecialties. His main teaching focus has always been to demystify many of the complex concepts in Nephrology without losing accuracy.----
