Hanna E. Abboud, MD

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Hanna Emile Abboud, age 67, on January 7, 2015.
Hanna was born in Jaffa, Palestine, and grew up in Amman, Jordan. He is the son of the late Huda and Emile Abboud. Hanna was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, mentor and colleague.
Hanna served as the Chief of the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) since 1990. Under his direction, the Nephrology Division achieved worldwide recognition for excellence in patient care, education and research. Another testament to his achievement is that the Nephrology Service at the University Hospital is repeatedly recognized as one of the top 50 programs in the US. His other honors include the Jay H. Stein Endowed Chair in Medicine/Nephrology and the Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award from the UTHSCSA.
Hanna was world-renowned for his research contributions to nephrology, particularly in the area of diabetic kidney disease. He published nearly 200 papers and received continuous research grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Administration throughout his career. He will be remembered for his wisdom, compassion, sense of humor, perseverance and unparalleled generosity and love of family.
