After a long and challenging illness, our good friend and fellow worker Ray Chow passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2022. It is with great regret that we share the news of his passing with you. Ray served SeaStar Medical as an advisor and board member for a period of three years, during which time he also held the position of Chairman of the Board. Ray was a brilliant tactician who was able to question established ways of thinking. He was instrumental in the development of SeaStar Medical's new vision, which renamed the disease state as hyperinflammation and broadened the applicability of SeaStar Medical's Selective Cytopheretic Device (SCD) to address major unmet clinical requirements in areas other than the kidney.
He was a motivated, strategic thinker who had the ability to easily strike a balance between strategic and tactical efforts. He was not just a buddy but also a trusted counsel to the organization. His views contributed to SeaStar Medical's effort to reimagine its unique platform. The SCD is a cell-directed extracorporeal therapy that selectively targets the most activated pro-inflammatory neutrophils and monocytes to stop the cytokine storm that causes organ failure and possibly death in critically ill patients, allowing the body to return to homeostasis. This is accomplished by targeting the most activated pro-inflammatory neutrophils and monocytes.
He had a profound dedication to the advancement of nephrology through innovation, and he spent his whole career working to advance renal treatment. Aranesp is a prescription drug that treats anemia caused by chronic renal disease in patients who are receiving dialysis. Throughout his career, he served as the global marketing director for Amgen's Aranesp. He started a nutraceutical company with the intention of helping people who suffer from chronic renal disease. He was the leader of a consultancy company that assisted biopharmaceutical firms in areas such as funding, commercial strategy, clinical research, medical affairs, sales and marketing, and other operational needs.
He had only just established a business with the intention of collaborating with newly emerging pre-commercial enterprises in the field of renal care to assist in the acceleration of innovation and the transformation of clinical outcomes for patients suffering from kidney disease. In addition to the success he had achieved in his professional life, Ray possessed a friendly disposition that could brighten any space. He had a positive attitude and was generous with his time. Everton Football Club, which plays in the English Premier League, held a special place in his heart. During the weekend mornings, you could find him watching games from the English Premiere League on television while having conversations with his pals from all over the world about how each team was doing. In addition to this, he was a revered youth soccer coach who passed on his enthusiasm for the sport to a new generation of players.
Ray was born in Liverpool, England, and went on to earn his doctorate in pharmacology from Aberystwyth University. He then went on to Manchester University to earn his bachelor's degree in biochemistry with honors. In 2003, he accepted a position at Amgen that required him to relocate his family to the United States. His children Oliver, Izabelle, and Tobey, as well as his wife Zoe, will carry on after his passing.
