Allen Arieff, MD

September 30, 1938 - November 4, 2022

Allen Arieff, M.D., passed away in his sleep in San Francisco, California, on November 4, 2022 after a long battle with dementia.

He is survived by his daughters Allison Arieff and Adrienne Arieff and their spouses Bryan Burkhart and Alexander Berline; and his three granddaughters, Emilia, Emma, and India. A lifetime Cubs fan, Arieff grew up in Chicago and was a graduate of the University of Illinois and Northwestern Medical School. He practiced medicine for over 50 years as a nephrologist and brain researcher working jointly at UCSF and the Veterans' Administration Hospital in San Francisco. He continued to see patients in private practice in Beverly Hills until the age of 77. He published 500 academic research papers and trained hundreds of medical students over the course of his long career.

In his free time, you'd find him at the San Francisco Opera, traveling to exotic locales, riding his bike up Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, or welding sculptures from scrap metal at the San Francisco Art Institute. But perhaps his greatest simple pleasure was sharing cappuccino and a pastry with his daughters who are devastated by the loss of their beloved father.
