Marianne Leenaerts died on April 1, 2025. After earning her PhD at age 50, she co-founded the Primary Aldosteronism Foundation and served as its CEO.
Her career included work in health policy, knowledge management, and public service—spanning roles at the United Nations and later as a consultant to academic and healthcare institutions.
She turned her focus to primary aldosteronism after receiving a diagnosis herself, working to improve awareness, diagnosis, and access to information. She led the Foundation until lung cancer was added to an already long list of health challenges.
