Murray Irving Sheldon, MD

October 27, 1949 - January 14, 2026

Murray I. Sheldon, MD, devoted his life to advancing kidney care, medical innovation, and patient advocacy. Born on October 27, 1949, Dr. Sheldon built a distinguished career as a pioneering surgeon, public servant, and relentless advocate for people living with kidney diseases.

As the former Associate Director for Technology and Innovation in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Dr. Sheldon helped transform the landscape of kidney medicine and expand the role of patient voices in health care decision-making. He championed patient-centered innovation and worked to improve access to new diagnostics, therapies, and life-saving technologies.

Dr. Sheldon consistently challenged outdated treatment approaches and regulatory barriers that limited patient access to care. He advanced conversations around transplantation, artificial implantable and wearable organs, and xenotransplantation, always focusing on improving and extending the lives of people living with kidney diseases.

He also played an important role in the Kidney Health Initiative (KHI), a collaboration between the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the FDA that brought together leaders across medicine, industry, and policy to advance kidney innovation and patient safety.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sheldon collaborated with leaders across medicine, government, and industry to improve kidney care and public health policy. Colleagues admired him for his intellect, integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to patients.

Even in his final years, Dr. Sheldon remained deeply engaged in efforts to improve kidney care and expand collaboration among health care leaders around the world. His work reflected a lifelong belief in compassion, innovation, and service to others.

Dr. Sheldon's legacy lives on through the countless patients, healthcare professionals, and advocates he inspired throughout his remarkable career.
