Daniel Cukor, PhD

A clinical psychologist, researcher, educator, and mentor, Dr. Cukor dedicated his career to advancing behavioral health in nephrology and improving the lives of people living with kidney diseases.

As Associate Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health, Dr. Cukor advanced the understanding and treatment of the psychological challenges associated with kidney diseases. His research focused on depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, fatigue, and medication adherence among people living with kidney diseases, helping establish behavioral health as an essential component of comprehensive kidney care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cukor combined research, clinical care, and education to improve patient care and advance the field. He mentored students, fellows, and early-career investigators, collaborated with colleagues across disciplines, and trained future leaders in nephrology and behavioral health. His scholarship included numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, invited lectures, and the edited volume Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Kidney Disease.

An active member of the nephrology community, Dr. Cukor shared his expertise through ASN Kidney Week presentations, publications in ASN journals, and educational programs. He also served on the ASN COVID-19 Response Committee and the Mental Health Module Subcommittee, helping address the challenges facing people living with kidney diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Cukor's commitment to research, education, mentorship, and compassionate patient care left a lasting mark on the nephrology community. His work continues to shape the understanding of behavioral health in kidney diseases and improve care for people living with kidney diseases. He will be remembered for his generosity, collaboration, and dedication to improving the lives of others.
