James J. Szwed, MD

April 8, 1939 - September 4, 2017

James Joseph Szwed, MD, passed away peacefully at home on September 4, 2017. Jim is preceded in death by his father Walter Szwed and his mother Helen Szwed. Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 8, 1939.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Kathryn Szwed; his sister, Beverly Palermino of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; his son, Dr. Joseph Szwed and his wife, Amy Szwed of Zionsville, Indiana; his son, Dr. Thomas Szwed and his wife, Charise Szwed of Jacksonville, Florida; his daughter, Dr. Ellen Szwed of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his daughter, Dr. Kathryn Szwed Thompson and her husband, Patrick Thompson; his beloved grandchildren, Patrick Szwed, Michael Szwed, Andrew Szwed, Matthew Szwed, and Jamie Thompson; and all of his beloved nieces and nephews.

Jim received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Chicago; his medical degree from Georgetown University; and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in nephrology at Indiana University. Jim was on faculty at the IU School of Medicine for 13 years; participated in nephrology research and published multiple articles. He practiced medicine as a nephrologist and internist for over 50 years. James provided health care for uninsured of Indianapolis at the Lighthouse Mission, Gennesaret Free Clinic and the Good Samaritan Clinic for over 25 years.

He loved spending time with his family; working in the garden; watching IU football and basketball games; playing the piano; spending the summers at Clearwater Beach, Florida; and walking his rescue dogs.
