What About the Babies? Updates on the Care of Newborns at Risk for Acute and Chronic Kidney Disease
October 23, 2020 | 02:30 PM - 04:30 PM
Location: Live-Streamed
Session Description
Over the last 5 years, the field of neonatal nephrology has emerged. We now know that AKI is very common in critically ill neonates, and we recognize the long-term consequences of AKI, prematurity, and intra-uterine growth failure. As more critically ill neonates are surviving, the number of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) graduates with CKD will continue to increase. This session addresses this "hot topic" in pediatric nephrology from the perspective of developmental biologists and adult clinicians who care for these NICU graduates.
ASN thanks the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology for assistance with this session.
Learning Objective(s)
- Explain how prematurity and intrauterine growth failure affect kidney development
- Review the epidemiology of neonatal AKI
- Identify which treatment strategies apply to both pediatric and adult populations and are currently being implemented for neonates to improve hospital outcomes
- Describe the long-term impact of AKI, prematurity, and intrauterine growth retardation on outcomes
- Update on Kidney Support Therapy for Neonates
Learning Pathway(s)
- Development and Pediatrics
- Chronic Kidney Disease

I am an assistant professor pediatric nephrologist and pediatric dialysis director at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. I am originally from Charlotte, NC. I graduated from Rice University where I was student-athlete of the year. I then graduated from the University of Missouri School of Medicine for my medical degree, University of South Carolina for my pediatric residency training, and Children’s Mercy Hospital for my pediatric nephrology fellowship. In my role as a clinician researcher, I am a UNC KL2 Scholar, Simmons Scholar, and Doris Duke Scholar dedicated to reducing pediatric kidney disease morbidity and mortality via research on earlier recognition of, and early intervention for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children. I hope to make an impact for my patients and the field of pediatric nephrology by understanding the best evidenced based approach to early pediatric CKD recognition in children after preterm birth.
My long-term goal, is to use precision medicine to develop risk prediction models and evidenced based clinical-decision support systems to most appropriately screen, identify, and risk stratify children at increased risk for CKD.

Massimo Attanasio, MD
Dr. Attanasio completed his medical training in Italy at the University of Napoli Federico II and his residency in pediatrics at the University of Parma. In 2008 he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in human genetics of kidney diseases at the University of Michigan. In the same year, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Human Genetics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. In 2010 he received the Norman Siegel Research Scholar Award from the American Society of Nephrology. Since 2017 Dr. Attanasio is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Attanasio’s work combines human and mouse genetics to understand the biological mechanisms of cystic kidney diseases, of transition from acute to chronic kidney disease, and of thrombotic microangiopathy
