Aylin R. Rodan, MD, PhD, FASN
Aylin R. Rodan, MD, PhD, FASN
Dr. Rodan is a nephrologist and physician-scientist interested in ion transporters and channels and their regulation. Dr. Rodan’s lab uses biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics in the fly, Drosophila melanogaster, to understand the molecular basis of ion transport physiology relevant to human physiology and disease.
Matthew A. Sparks, MD, FASN
Matthew A. Sparks, MD, FASN
Matthew Sparks, MD is an assistant professor of medicine at Duke University and serves as the Associate Program Director for the Nephrology Fellowship Program. He is Director of Medical Student Research in the Department of Medicine where he helps to promote research of 3rd year of medical school at Duke University. His lab is interested in understanding how altering blood flow to the kidney regulates blood pressure. His research has been funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Heart Association. He is also involved in leveraging social media for education. He is a founding faculty member and program director of the Nephrology Social Media Collective (NSMC) and member of the board of directors of nephrology journal club (NephJC), a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing free online medical education in nephrology. He is Co-creator of NephMadness. Faculty lead of Renal Fellow Network. He is a member of several national committees spanning ASN and AHA. He also serves as Education Director for KIDNEYcon- a yearly hands-on conference dedicated to advances in nephrology held in Little Rock, AR each April.

Sylvie Breton, MS, PhD
Sylvie Breton, MS, PhD
Dr. Breton received her PhD in Biophysics from the University of Montreal and is currently a Professor of Medicine at Université Laval and Emeritus Professor at Harvard Medical School. She is the recipient of the Canadian Research Chair in Epithelial Dynamics. Dr. Breton has a broad interest in epithelial biology, having made significant contributions to our understanding of ion transport in both renal and epididymal epithelia. Her work uses cutting edge microscopy approaches to study epithelial cell function in the native environment. In the kidney she has focused on proton-secretion by intercalated cells along the collecting duct. More recently Dr. Breton identified a novel role for intercalated cells in renal injury. She found that activation of P2Y14 receptors on their surface by the pro-inflammatory molecule UDP-glucose leads to generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This induces renal neutrophil and monocyte recruitment, and promotes renal tubule injury leading to renal dysfunction.
