Educational Symposium
Hyperphosphatemia Management in Adults Treated with Dialysis for Kidney Failure: Old Lessons, New Directions
November 04, 2022 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM
Location: Regency Ballroom S, Hyatt Regency Orlando
Session Description
Hyperphosphatemia is a primary hallmark of CKD, particularly in people with ESKD. Most people with ESKD who are on dialysis are hyperphosphatemic; almost all people with dialysis-dependent kidney failure experience hyperphosphatemia at some point during the course of their disease. As a complex condition, treatment often requires a multilevel approach delivered by a multidisciplinary team.
This symposium reviews the fundamentals of phosphorus metabolism in conjunction with advancements in the understanding of cellular transports and biology and the development of novel pharmacologic or other treatments for hyperphosphatemia. Also discussed are nutritional and lifestyle approaches to optimizing health outcomes. This symposium further considers emerging evidence from clinical trials for weighing the efficacy of a treatment against the complexity of implementing and maintaining the treatment plan.
Support is provided by an educational grant from Akebia Therapeutics, Inc.
