My Patient Is Weak and Frail: What Can I Do About It?
November 02, 2023 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 109, Pennsylvania Convention Center
Session Description
Frailty and physical function impairment are common and frustrating problems for both patients with CKD and nephrologists, and they have a major adverse impact on patient outcomes. This session reviews recent advances in understanding the development of frailty and functional impairment in CKD, methods of assessment, impact on outcomes (including kidney transplantation), and the potential for exercise and other novel interventions to preserve and restore functional status in CKD patients.
ASN thanks KDIGO for assistance with this session.
Learning Objective(s)
- Describe the effects of CKD on physical function and the development of frailty
- Summarize the variety of methods available for frailty assessment and their applicability to clinical practice
- Explain the impact of frailty status on outcomes among patients with CKD, including following kidney transplantation
- Discuss treatment options for ameliorating frailty, including exercise and novel therapeutic interventions
- To understand the patient perspective of frailty and how to talk to patients about frailty.
Learning Pathway(s)
- CKD Non-Dialysis
- Geriatric Nephrology
