Educational Symposium
Anemia in CKD and ESKD: From Epidemiology and Pathophysiology to Current Treatments
November 02, 2023 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM
Location: Grand Ballroom Salon I, Level 5, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown
Session Description
Anemia is a common complication in CKD and ESKD and is associated with a reduced quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of anemia also increases with CKD severity. The pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in anemia due to kidney diseases are diverse and complex, including a decrease in endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) production, absolute and/or functional iron deficiency, and inflammation with increased hepcidin levels, among others. Over the last few years, there have been some remarkable advances in the treatment of kidney disease-related anemia, including hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs), and recent clinical trials have shown important aspects of iron supplementation.
This symposium reviews the epidemiology and pathophysiology of kidney disease-related anemia and current therapies to optimize treatment of anemia of CKD and ESKD.
Support is provided by an educational grant from GSK.
