Educational Symposium
Hyperkalemia in Diabetes and Heart Failure: Optimizing Management to Mitigate Risk
November 03, 2023 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM
Location: Grand Ballroom Salon I, Level 5, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown
Session Description
Hyperkalemia is a common problem in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and heart failure, is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and is burdensome to health care systems. Patients with DKD often have inherent hyperkalemic tendencies. Optimization of medications that slow disease progression, including established and next-generation renin-angiotensin-system (RAS) blockers and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), is limited by the development of hyperkalemia. Yet evidence suggests that hyperkalemia-driven undertreatment with these agents is associated with adverse clinical outcomes.
This symposium reviews causes and effects of hyperkalemia in patients with DKD and heart failure and discusses management strategies that aid in the optimization of medical therapy for these conditions.
Support is provided by an educational grant from AstraZeneca.
