Educational Symposium
Real-World Management of Hyperkalemia in Cardiorenal Patients
November 02, 2023 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM
Location: Grand Ballroom Salon D, Level 5, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown
Session Description
Hyperkalemia is a frequent complication in patients with underlying risk factors such as CKD and diabetes mellitus and with therapy with certain medications. Disturbances in the movement of potassium into cells, as well as the renal and gastrointestinal excretion of potassium, underlie the development of hyperkalemia in these patients. Importantly, recurrent and potentially life-threatening hyperkalemia commonly develops in these patients when they suffer from heart failure and are treated with drugs that target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). These include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs). However, these medications are critically important therapies to effectively manage this group of patients with heart failure and underlying cardiorenal syndrome. As such, it is a priority to undertake steps to allow these patients to remain on RAAS inhibitors and MRAs to improve overall outcomes. This symposium provides health care providers with an update on the management of patients with cardiorenal syndrome that develop hyperkalemia when treated with RAAS inhibitors and MRAs.
Support is provided by an educational grant from CSL Vifor.
